Rev. Asher McDaniel holds the burning mortgage aloft as the bishop leads the congregation in a responsive reading.
In a gesture of dedication and completion last Sunday, the Chillicothe UMC burned the mortgage to their now completely paid addition. The symbolic event was marked by the presence of former Chillicothe UMC ministers, Rev. Ross Fulton, Jr., Rev. H.J. Hudson, Jr., and Rev. George C. Moore. Also in attendance were Bishop Ann B. Sherer and District Superintendent Phillip Niemeyer. The service was presided over by current pastor, Rev. Asher McDaniel and Associate Pastor Greg Hughes.
Chillicothe broke ground for the addition in May of 1997. The church took residence in the new Christian Life Center on Easter Sunday in 1998. Only months later, the full use of the building was turned over. The check for the final mortgage payment was written and sent out September 3rd, 2002. The new addition includes a large multi-function gym/recreation area, a new kitchen, a new playground area, and several new classrooms.
Mr. Paul Steele, the chairman of the building committee, led other committee members and officials in the burning of the mortgage contract to symbolize the completion of months of work, prayer, and giving that have been answered by the realization of the new CLC. Performing at the ceremonies were the children's Cherub Choir under the direction of Mrs. Diane McDaniel, and the adult Chancel Choir under the direction of Don Sowers. A reception followed in Griffin Hall.
