Remember those in the Military: Anthony Anderson, Jameson Black, Beth Bourne (Nonie Brookshier’s
niece), Ryan Castle (
“Uncle Bill,
what can I do to help?” Undeterred by my
initial lack of response my five year old nephew launched into
another attempt to get my attention, “Uncle Bill, I want to do something! What can I do to help?”
Even though I had consented
to have him ‘help’ me, at twenty-four years of age, I was impatient, and driven
to complete the construction project I had undertaken. I did not want to just be baby sitting with a
five year old. On the other hand, how
could you ignore such a sweet plea by such a cute kid? So I pounded a big spike nail about a
quarter of the way into a two by four, gave him an extra hammer, and said,
“Knock yourself out!”
He spent the next twenty
minutes as content as could be, pounding and pounding and pounding. Upon completion of the task, he could not
wait until I could get him started on another nail.
This is life is it not? As human beings we want so much to be
involved, imitate those we admire, and crave acceptance by those we adore.
Perhaps you had to be there
to appreciate this story. None the less,
it was endearing to my heart. At the
same time, you may be asking what does this have to do with spiritual
growth. Not much, really! And yet, I see it as a reflection of what
happens when people unite with a community of faith. They want to get involved, hoping to be
accepted, trusting that they can make a difference, and they do not know what
to do.
I wish that I could put a
hammer in every one of your hands. I can
not!
But I know a God who is
waiting, and wanting you to turn and say, “What can I do? I want to do something to bring eternal life
to others.
When the moment arrives that
you say, “Yes, Lord, here am I’, I know that I or my staff can get you started
on a ministry that makes a difference.
It may not be driving a nail, but the reward will be greater.
Grace and Peace, Bill D. Reese
